The OECI launched the Accreditation Programme in 2002 to fulfil one of its goals:
to provide cancer patients within Europe an equal access to high quality of cancer care.
There have been two rounds of pilot projects from 2006 till 2008. In the first pilot four cancer centres used a tool for self assessment of the centre. In the second pilot project four cancer centres used the improved self assessment tool and auditors visited three centres for peer review on site. The two pilot projects provided input for improvement and development of the current accreditation system, self assessment tool and the standards.
Centres involved in the second pilot were:
- University Hospital VU, Brussels
- Centre G.F. LeClerc, Dijon
- Instituto Tumori, Bari
- National Institute of Oncology, Budapest
